"That's because you have eight functioning brain cells."

Christopher Hitchens

“Even if it were possible to cast my horoscope in this one life, and to make an accurate prediction about my future, it would not be possible to 'show' it to me because as soon as I saw it my future would change by definition. This is why Werner Heisenberg's adaptation of the Hays Office—the so-called principle of uncertainty whereby the act of measuring something has the effect of altering the measurement—is of such importance. In my case the difference is often made by publicity. For example, and to boast of one of my few virtues, I used to derive pleasure from giving my time to bright young people who showed promise as writers and who asked for my help. Then some profile of me quoted someone who disclosed that I liked to do this. Then it became something widely said of me, whereupon it became almost impossible for me to go on doing it, because I started to receive far more requests than I could respond to, let alone satisfy. Perception modifies reality: when I abandoned the smoking habit of more than three decades I was given a supposedly helpful pill called Wellbutrin. But as soon as I discovered that this was the brand name for an antidepressant, I tossed the bottle away. There may be successful methods for overcoming the blues but for me they cannot include a capsule that says: 'Fool yourself into happiness, while pretending not to do so.' I should actually want my mind to be strong enough to circumvent such a trick.”

“Well, I'm not here to impinge on anybody else's lifestyle. If I'm in a place where I know I'm going to harm somebody's health or somebody asks me to please not smoke, I just go outside and smoke. But I do resent the way the nonsmoking mentality has been imposed on the smoking minority. Because, first of all, in a democracy, minorities do have rights. And, second, the whole pitch about smoking has gone from being a health issue to a moral issue, and when they reduce something to a moral issue, it has no place in any kind of legislation, as far as I'm concerned.”

“Does it make sense to boycott ourselves? Does it hold water to boycott the fluid course of our life? Is it consistent to commit self-sabotage by destroying wittingly our corporeal and mental structure?

Those are the questions thousands of people may ask as they are confronted with the schizophrenic dilemma on the point of smoking, boozing, doping, sexual transgressing or environmental polluting. Many seem to be aware of their problem. Many have decided to stop from tomorrow on. But when tomorrow and after tomorrow come many tend to let slip their vow and their self-sabotage goes on to rule their life. Their dissonant behavior transforms them into social losers or hopeless patsies and depresses them into the class of forlorn pariahs. They realize, as such, that self-handicapping makes no sense, but are not able to protect themselves from themselves since they haven’t got the muscle to live down the spell of addiction.

Thousands of people may feel having set the bar too high and recognize they are are failing to find the right angle and are missing sufficient insight to steer their life.

If, however, they decide to give it a try they should be aware that the road may be very bumpy and that they have to be prepared for disappointments and regressions, that they might have to deal with very slowly crescent improvements, that they shouldn’t take themselves for a ride and that they could only possibly succeed by focusing painfully on the path to breaking free from the hornet's nest they have got themselves into.”

“Personally, if I were trying to discourage people from smoking, my sign would be a little different. In fact, I might even go too far in the opposite direction. My sign would say something like, "Smoke if you wish. But if you do, be prepared for the following series of events: First, we will confiscate your cigarette and extinguish it somewhere on the surface of your skin. We will then run you nicotine-stained fingers through a paper shredder and throw them into the street, where wild dogs will swallow them and then regurgitate them into the sewers, so that infected rats can further soil them before they're flushed out to sea with the rest of the city's filth. After such time, we will sysematically seek out your friends and loved one and destroy their lives."

I have been smoking for 22 years. I am in my late 30′s to early 40′s. I took me 7 years to quit.

This is how I did it with no special expensive surgery or products. You can use this way and quit in 6 months or a month or a year, anyway you like.

I had a plan.

1. 7 years ago I stopped the habit of smoking the moment I woke up. I waited at least 4 hours then I smoked. (this helped create a dislike to smoke in the morning) and yes I had coffee still.

2. 5 Years ago I refused to smoke in my home. (this helped a lot kick the craving when I am home) If I wanted to smoke I went out side,.as time when on the days I was home all day I only smoked no more than 5 cigarettes the whole day.

Now I have been parking my car farther to walk to work and home. This helped pissing me off because I was huffing and puffing on the way.

3. I woke up on thanksgiving day 2 months ago and watched my kids playing (haven’t been able to do that in a while) I work 18 hours a day 5 days a week and 9 hours 1 day a week and 1 day off a week. I went to Costco and bought a bag of wintogreen certs and 2 packs of gum. I threw away my last pack of cigarettes. I love my kids I want to stay the longest I can with them.

Every time I want a cigarette I take a certs or a gum. It works! I hang around people that smoke, it doesn’t phase me. All I need now is to lose 65 lbs. I hope this helps someone quit. I can always smoke a cigarette anytime I want. I don’t want it anymore, and neither do you. (It’s all mental.) Stop being a quitter on life and push to live, you only get one life so no matter how wrong you did in the past its never too late to start now. Avoid becoming a memory to your loved ones anytime soon.

Holly Marie Combs Life Me Start I'm about as healthy as a person can be. I quit smoking seven or eight years ago. Karen Allen Person Quit Healthy I just don't want anyone messing around with my pure smoking pleasure. Max Cannon Pleasure Pure Want I'm sickened by all religions. Religion has divided people. I don't think there's any difference between the pope wearing a large hat and parading around with a smoking purse and an African painting his face white and praying to a rock. Howard Stern Religion Face Painting I look at smoking as a crutch, and as an actor I would like strip away as many crutches as possible. Carolyn Gold Heilbrun Habit I Am Dirty It totally ruins my voice. I quit smoking, drinking, and doing ecstasy. Mark Hoppus Voice Doing Quit In England, it's a rare thing to see a player smoking but, all in all, I prefer that to an alcoholic. And then I got into the Civilian Conservation Corps and into the army, and I started smoking and drinking and being tough and getting muscles, and I had a whole different image of myself. Walter Matthau Romantic Myself Tough It is easy to defend the right of people to do things that fit in with the cultural norms of the majority. This includes practices that give personal pleasure but may be harmful, such as smoking or drinking. It is harder to argue for minority activities, especially those which stand out and may be obviously unsuitable in certain contexts.
